We might add to Gary’s “Photograph in nature” that a wider angle to show the ecosystem where your specimens were growing can be useful. And make sure to age your cross sections sufficiently that any blueing or color changes have become visible.

Even the pros now say that your iPhone is good enough for really excellent photos.
